Positioned on a serene stretch of shoreline between the Choctawhatchee Bay and Gulf of Mexico, the communities of Destin and Miramar Beach are the epicenter of Florida’s panhandle coast. This smaller city is family-friendly, fraught with outdoor activities, and both condos and larger single-family homes enjoy unparalleled waterfront views. Lazy afternoons spent swimming, boating, and laying out on the beach are just as popular as golfing, strolling through outdoor shopping plazas, and enjoying some of the best southern food in the state, all of which is accented with fresh seafood straight from the Gulf.
The hotspot of Florida’s northern Gulf Coast is gleeful, vibrant, and rarely leaves locals searching for sources of entertainment. One of the community’s longest-running establishments is found at Captain Dave’s on the Gulf. Since 1968, locals have flocked to Captain Dave’s for their variety of shrimp dishes, Cajun catfish, fried oysters, and other flavorful seafood delights. Pompano Joe’s is another similar seafood shack boasting beautiful views of the Gulf. In addition to their fresh seafood, Pompano Joe’s is also known for its desserts, and creative tropical drinks. Within the Surfside Resort, Royal Palm Grille specializes in sushi and surf-and-turf options, also served overlooking the Gulf. Located a little more inland, Destin Commons is the community’s best spot to enjoy some retail therapy or catch a movie. Some of the better-known names from their collection of nearly 70 stores consist of Sephora, H&M, and Bath & Body Works, to name a few. Throughout the year, Destin hosts several events to commemorate the seaside lifestyle. The Destin Seafood Festival has been a community favorite since 1978. Serving as the kickoff to the Destin Fishing Rodeo, attendees can sample the best seafood from the region, enjoy music performed by talented musicians, and shop for local goods alongside over 60,000 festival-goers. Throughout the year, locals enjoy close proximity to beautiful, peaceful state parks like the Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and Henderson Beach State Park. Topsail Hill covers 1,640 acres of beautiful coastline while Henderson Beach stretches across 6,000 feet of premier shoreline facing out into the Gulf of Mexico. Here, visitors can swim, boat, paddleboard, lay out and soak up the sun, and enjoy Florida’s pristine weather.
Children living in Destin and Miramar Beach are zoned to excellent schools. Destin High School is one of the newer schools in the region, having just opened for the 2021-2022 school year. The new campus is beautiful, centrally located, equipped with modern technology, and boasts a small student population and low student-teacher ratio.
